I married a prisoner for money while he was serving a twelve-year sentence — but after his conviction was overturned, he came to my apartment with a black box and said, “Now it’s my turn to be honest.”

he could answer, my phone vibrated.

A familiar name appeared on the screen.

ELEANOR VANCE.

Julian stared at it.

Then looked at me.

“She’s found out.”

I swallowed.

“Found out what?”

“That I have the documents.”

The phone continued ringing.

“Answer it,” Julian said quietly. “Put it on speaker.”

With trembling hands, I accepted the call.

“Nora!” Eleanor’s voice filled the kitchen. “Where is Julian?”

I looked at my husband.

“He’s here.”

Her tone sharpened.

“Listen carefully. Whatever he’s told you, do not believe everything he says.”

I remained silent.
